A new doll usually arrives ready to go, but a short inspection and prep pass before the first use catches problems while they’re still covered by a return window, not after. Fifteen minutes, five steps.

1. Inspect before you do anything else
Unbox on a clean, soft surface and check the whole body under good light for shipping damage: seam splits, dents from packing pressure, or a joint that feels wrong when you move it. Photograph anything questionable immediately, before use, while it’s still clearly a shipping issue rather than a wear issue. Most sellers have a short window to report problems.
2. Give it an initial wash
New dolls often have a light manufacturing residue on the surface. A gentle wash with warm water and mild unscented soap, following the same technique as routine cleaning, removes it and is a good first dry-run of the care process you’ll be repeating regularly.
3. Let it fully air dry
Don’t rush this step. Prop the doll so air circulates and give it several hours before handling further. Trapped moisture from the very first wash is a common way owners create a mildew problem before they’ve even used the doll once.
4. Check every joint through its full range
Move each joint slowly through its intended range while everything is still new. This is how you catch a manufacturing defect, a joint that’s too loose or unexpectedly stiff, while a return is still simple.
5. Brush out the wig and powder the skin
Wigs are often compressed flat from packaging. A soft brush, starting at the ends and working up, restores it. Once the body is fully dry, a light dusting of TPE powder gets the skin to its intended finish (silicone dolls can skip this). At that point, storage setup is the only thing left before regular use begins.
